Suffolk pub history group
Landlord Ady Smith at the Dove Street Inn in Ipswich is organising a pub history group with one common aim, to collect as much information on Suffolk Pubs as possible before it is lost forever.
Many people have information on Suffolk pubs and by bringing it together and sharing photos, licensee names and even stories, we hope to be able to catalogue it and make it available for generations to come.
So far, we have managed to identify approximately 1500 former Suffolk pubs (nearly 320 in Ipswich alone) with accurate or reasonably close locations for 1004 of them. There are certainly a lot more pubs we haven't managed to identify, but just identifying pubs is only one part of the project, we want to make available as much information about their history as possible.
Meetings take place on the second Monday of the month, with a summer break between June and August. Forthcoming dates are:
The meetings will normally take place at the Dove Street Inn from 7:30 and copying, scanning and other media will be available to assist with the project and all items loaned or donated will be returned, with acknowledgements made for the assistance of participating members.
Although this is about Suffolk pubs, the emphasis in the first four months will be mainly on Ipswich, after which we hope to roll out across the county, where we hope more localised groups will be set up; any information will then be transferred to the main database.
To add a bit more into these relaxed yet informative meetings, it is also intended to bring in a guest speaker to add more information to the project.
All the resulting information will be looked after by the local CAMRA branch and will mainly be available via the CAMRA Suffolk Real Ale Guide website, with the raw data also available on-line to allow individuals to perform further research.
